Applying "Object Data" to Decoration Knots rotates them

When I applied Object Datas to the Knots they all rotate. Can nnot figure out what I am doing wrong.

thank you

Hi Martin! I'm not quite sure what you mean...Do you mean linking object data between the boards? If so, take a look at this thread: https://cgcookie.com/questions/11932-when-i-link-the-object-data-the-objects-move-why#answer-48315

    Hi Kent

I just can't figure out how to solve the Rotation ....When I do "Make Links - Object Data" they also take over the rotation....

they all have the same Rotation (0°) and Scale (1.000)

all is set to "origin to Geometry", I went through all options (Ithink) . Your Link unfortunately didn't help me.

Hi Martin, I think you Applied the Rotation of those 'knots'. Or rotated them in Edit Mode...

Here's a ground rule (with some exceptions, when you know what you are doing): always Apply the Scale and never Apply the Rotation...

So this would work when linking the Object Data:

But when you Apply the Rotation of the top one, then it's Origin gets the same orientation as the bottom one and the Object Data says something like: 'where are the Vertices of this Mesh compared to the Origin (of the Object)', so when you link the Object Data of the top one to the bottom one, they also get the same rotation...Does that make any sense to you? I have a hard time explaining this.

Ah I see now: By "knots" you mean metal "rivets" as I referred to them. Sorry I was confused since the wood planks could also have knots.

I think spikey's advice is spot on. You likely applied rotation along with scale after you duplicated each rivet. Instead you want to leave local rotations intact and only apply the scale. The mesh data that gets linked is relative to the objects transformations.

No need to apologize, you're english is very good! Technically they might not be "rivets" either 😅
