I had some really strange artifacts when applying solidify modifier, and it took me some time to resolve that.
I'm still not sure what has happened, but well, maybe it will help someone in the future.
So, under the "mode" just change from "simple" to "complex" and your life will maybe become just a little bit easier! :-)
