Do I need to apply the "Subsurf Modifier" when using the baken "Normal Map" in a game engine?

Is it necessary to apply the "Subsurf Modifier" when using the baken "Normal Map" in a game engine or can I keep my original low poly mesh and use the "Subsurf Modifier" creatend "Normal Map" since it's an image texture existing independently from any UV map grid?

    You do not need to apply the subdiv, which is good because that would slow things down quite a bit!
