Jupiter 2 Concept and Practice Modeling Work In Progress

Decided to try and tackle modeling the Jupiter 2 for the exercise and practice. Went through a lot of reference and there are several differences in the references and a little vague in areas so I am reinterpreting and taking a lot of license in the original and in engineering, lol. It wasn't as easy as I thought it might be and SketchFab doesn't like instances, among other things. It changes how you thought you could model something when you plan how you basically want to approach the modeling and then find out SketchFab doesn't like certain things. I did learn to test things in SketchFab before going to far. From the Low Poly Rocket Animation course I learned how easy instance are and wanted to implement them in this model...my hopes were dashed, lol. I did make them and the renders are showing the instances. A pretty cool feature.

Not finished but getting the landing gear mostly finished is a major part done. I made them instances but SketchFab won't render them, so will make the changes and be mindful of that in the future.

There are many things yet to do and to tweak here, especially when viewing the renders here..

My goal is to animate this and have various parts animated, especially the landing gear retracting out of the ship and moving into position for landing. A lofty goal and this will be my ongoing project I tinker with while doing courses.

I don't know exactly what categories this would fit and how do you add more than one tag?

EDIT: Decided to do a test animation to see how things are working on the landing gear. I am surprised how ell and easy it was to do this. I know it still needs work but I have to give credit to the Low Poly Rocket Animation Course. It made things very clear and easy to understand. I hope he makes more courses! I have added the short animation.

  • Really looking good brad-nbo. I particularly like the articulation on the landing legs.

Looking nice Brad, you are super productive for sure. The goddess Productemys is pleased. Don't worry about the categories, no one notices it.

Thanks. When I was well and working freelance I would at time work over 100 hours a week. I am what you'd call a work-a-holic. I'm chronically ill and need to do something so I'm at this about 50 hours a week. lol, I'm not creative or good like a lot of people on here but I am busy, hoping to learn something, lol.
Thank y o u and Martin for all you r help and input.

      Hi Omar,
I decided to try animating the landing gear and it was surprising easier than I thought, thanks to Tthe mini course Modeling and Animating a Low Poly Rocket. I hope he makes more courses. He made things clear to me I didn't catch on to before.

  • I already like it a lot! This will be soooo cool once animated! Keep us updated :)

Thanks. It may be awhile. I'm just learning animation and this is going to be like a 'restoration of a car in the garage' type project for me. But I love the challenge of it.

I managed to do a short animation, if you're interested. Thanks

looks already nice, I would try to also animate the hydraulic system when it is retracting, would add a lot of realism and I think it should not be so much extra work. Found a quick reference from outside cgcookie... sorry for that..: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=st84B470kLk

Awesome, Thanks! Yeah, exactly, I agree with you 100%, this is where it will eventually get into is the rigging. I think I'm going to save that for future. I just wanted to see if my modeling worked with the gear retracting into the ship. It so that there would be a tiny hint of a seam and everything was flush and smooth. From the How to Model and Animate a Low Poly Rocket, I learned how to simply animate something with the key frames. He made it so simple and clear. It's a great mini course, I hope he makes more.
Thanks for the reference, it will come in handy and saves me trying to find how to do it and it's exactly what I was thinking would have to be done.. Thanks.
