Low poly bats coming to invade your dreams. . .
I found my answer to the question below. I had a shrink warp modifier I was using to try to "stick" the skin to the bones. The animation worked better without it, and I had turned the modifier off everywhere except in the final render. I removed the modifier and now things are working properly.

Maybe somebody could answer me this. It renders properly in the viewport, but the bones and skin of the wings become separated when rendering for real.
The rendered result with the skin/bone separation:
Woah!
What is this? Freaky Friday?
The bat looks great wardred
Thanks AAdrian.
I spent way too much time playing with my mistakes. The animation deadline for the Astray Halloween contest is coming up.
I need to focus on the last couple creatures for the scene. . . then actually putting the scene together. . . even if the mistakes were fun.
The bats. . . something's wrong with them:

Whoops! That rope just doesn't want to behave.
I sleep poorly as it is Wardred, and I scare easily. Look freakish.
