I'm really happy with the result I achieved. The only thing that didn't seem quite right is the "welding" of the seams when I baked everything. I'll have to go back to the "calculating" shader, but the edges look much more like the hand painted grunge before I baked everything.
I also want to do a better overall presentation. Maybe a pedestal or simple background. Definitely want to redo the turntable like animation to get close ups of stuff.
For now, this is what I have.
Thank you @otawa, ricardog, and pprocyonlotor. Everyone really.
I'll get back to Pot Head in a bit to put him in a better environment and clean up a few things, but I'm working on animating right now.
Nice job! I definitely to tackle this course one of these days.
❤
Great job Wardred!
Ok I see with the reference image. You are getting close to your goal then. I guess the things that stand out to me are some of the strokes, they feel too brush like, they are very uniformly pushed in, the bump is doing a lot of heavy lifting. For example on the seam in the foot, on the hand and forearm. It's just those details, overall it looks freaking good.
Thank you for your feedback. It helps to know where I still have a bit of work to do.
I think on those areas I reached the "maximum bump" and it smoothed out to the max bump level. I can erase some of the bump there to get a less uniform and smoothed out/pushed in look.
dostovel - There are definitely places where I could better even out the strokes between worn and normal faces.
I'll work on that.
I was going for something along the lines of sea rusted steel:

That, and just an overall much more battered appearance in general than the original concept art. I think I started down that path because the original grunge photo I located was different than the tutorial and already made Pot Head look more beaten up. . . and had some repeating lines I wanted to obfuscate.
Then I just liked the look. Pot Head 20 years later left out in the weather near a sea coast, and maybe having to fight here and there in the intervening years.
It is looking good Wardred. The bump feels exaggerated in some areas and look very brush-like, stroked with a broad point falloff. Maybe look at some references of natural wear and tear and try to place them in parts where our brains understands them as intuitive. Also as you said the presentation and lighting can be more appealing.
But you're 95% there, it just needs some tweaking here and there, then you're basically in the last lap of the race, near the finish line and no one has a blue shell to throw at you.
The bright renders are with Cycles.
At the moment I actually like the darker Evee renders better.
Definitely need to adjust my lighting.
