My submission for the Class of 2019.
Had a lot of fun making this!
My first Eevee render.
It's supposed to be a stylized barrel, but I'm not sure if I managed that completely;)
Still, I'm happy with the result.
Here's where the title comes from:
The story goes, that when admiral Nelson was shot at the battle of Trafalgar, it was decided to bury him at land and to conserve his body, it was put in a barrel of rum. Now the ordinary seamen didn't know about this and went on with their custom to drill a small hole in the barrel and suck out the rum through a straw.
Since then, in sailor's slang, rum is called 'Nelson's blood'.
spikeyxxx Sorry didn't get notified for your reply (may be it's because you didn't mme?) I can see this time it's wood plank creating the delusion. My first Eevee render is way worse than yours and my Cycles render always sucks :)
Thank you Benjamin!
Those are really good points.
As to point 2, the barrel really isn't intersecting with the crate, although I agree that it looks like it is ;)
This was a Class submission, so there was a deadline and many things could be improved or changed.
Some things are just design decisions (not showing the (oil lamp) lights left and right...using only the moonlight to guide the eye towards the barrel (not really a success, as you mentioned, the column is fighting for attention...), making the blood more dried out, meaning less shiny, etc...
I'm still on a learning journey and really appreciate the feedback! I will take your notes into account for future projects: thanks again!
Love the feeling of moon shine.
Guess you've put a lot efforts in modeling all these objects, really good submission :)
Some thoughts:
1. At first glance I don't know where to look at. I guess it should be the barrel but the column stands out too.
2. Barrel collide with the box
3. Iron part of barrel lacks of details (add some scratch?)
4. Wine should reflect more light. It's a good focus point.
5. Light from right (yellow box) looks a little bit weird since I can't see its light source
Thanks a lot!
I tried doing the dust in Eevee with a noise texture plugged into the volume, but couldn't get it to work;)
So I did it in post-processing, using a few masks.
spikeyxxx this looks amazing. I love the 'dust in the air' effect of the lighting.
frikkr Thank you!
I was actually thinking about that, but decided against it;)
There is so much more I could have done, but you just have to stop at a certain point, especially when there is a deadline.
(Maybe drilling some small holes in the barrel where the sailors drank from?)
I think it was good for me to have a deadline, otherwise this would have not been finished in a long time, maybe even never;)
But thanks again for your comment!
I've followed your progress with this in the forum and it's great to see it finished :) , well done! The lighting works really well and your texture painting turned out great, The only thing I notice that looks off to me is the hole in the barrel doesn't have any evidence on it that the puddle on the floor has leaked out from there. perhaps some staining/drips around the hole might have helped the story telling here. Can't wait to see what you do next.
