Just remove that marked edge and use the knife tool (shortcut: k) to cut a new edge from one end (vertex) to the other. This way you would get the desired vertex at the marked spot.
Blender (and most other software) doesn't "make sense" of edges or faces which overlap. You will have to deal with this kind of stuff manually.
