I’m proud to finally present a project I’ve been working on since 2015:
A diorama scene depicting the Battle of Hoth from “Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back”. My ultimate goal was to present drama and emotion through percieved detail while limiting my polycount as much as possible; Putting weight and motion into each hand-posed character to mimic the feeling one might get looking at a table with wargaming miniatures.
The concept was partially inspired by the Halo 3 “Believe” ad series.
NOTE: This project was recently revisited with new renders in 2022!
No external textures were used, only vertex color painting and some baking for PBR compatability within Sketchfab, and reduced file size.
Done 100% in Blender3D.
Getting to extensively use vertex painting was one of the most fun aspects of this project. I also gained a lot of experience in basic character modelling, and until now, I had never used Blender’s rigging system. I gained so much more confidence in Cycles materials, and particle effects as well.
Thanks for viewing!
This is SO RAD
pedro_l26 Hey thanks so much for leavin' some love, I'm glad you think so!
@jlampel Wow, thank you so much for the compliments, Jonathan! That really means a lot to me! I'm a big fan of your work. :D
I'm really glad you liked the explosions and other special effects in particular. After I noticed that real dioramas used things like painted cotton with lamps inside to simulate explosions, I felt like I absolutely couldn't go without!
Thanks again for stopping by. :)
Awesome!
This is awesome, nice work Kyle! I like how you added explosions and everything to the real-time scene.
