Sculpting - First attempt Final

I sculpted a lot with clay as a kid but it's been a long time. So I figured I'd try a quick sculpt. Also played with the pointiness input to add some patina to the copper.

Some of your reasons are pretty similar to what we wrote about in a blog post last year, you might enjoy the read! https://cgcookie.com/2016/06/30/digital-vs-traditional-sculpting/

  • Traditional sculpting was always a soothing activity to get lost in. Some of the limitations of physical clay made it less than ideal to work with but it was sometimes those limitations that created happy accidents and helped propel creativity in new directions (clay texture or limited supply of clay for example). This was almost 20 years ago for me though and as a kid I didn't really see art the same way; sculpting in particular was just playtime and not so much a means of personal expression.

Digital sculpting I find very freeing and I think it would be difficult to go back to traditional sculpting. There is just too much convenience to it. But both are enjoyable for their own reasons.

The tactile feedback of traditional sculpting is probably its greatest advantage over digital an an enjoyable thing in and of itself. Being able to do one sculpture and view it in multiple materials with the push of a button is hard to beat though.
