This was rendered with Blender Internal. I updated the material for the primitives.
Some prefer the quad only topology of a cube projected to a sphere. A more uniform lower poly sphere with less UV distortion at the poles may be achieved using this approach. Different solutions for different applications.
When is a sphere not a sphere? When it is a cube.

Best part is it is just three simple modifiers. Subsurf, Cast, and wireframe.
