Scarecrow Quick Sketch (No Armor) Final

This piece is a simple and quick digital sketch I made in Krita. Scarecrow is a character I made in my fiction writing class and then transformed into one of my DnD characters. The original idea for scarecrow was to have his brown leather attire as he does now, but with some European knight armor equipped as well. Though for DnD, I had to change his appearance due to his class as a Kensai Magus, who wears no armor. Therefore comes this representation of him without armor. I took the most time on those boots. I never was great with boots and could only draw the big heavy duty block-ish ones, not elegant or normal ones like Scarecrow has in this picture. They still are not perfect, but this little piece helped me improve my understanding with this type of boot’s line flow. Still pretty proud of making that break through. Feel free to critique and provide any feedback. Again, this was a quick sketch and I went in with the attitude of “I don’t care what the end result is”, which I should do more often to help me practice more and especially since I got a pretty decent creation in respect to my usual work. So I know it has flaws, but yeah, critique away, I’d love to improve.

  • Thank you! I feel that I stop myself from doing art because I worry too much what it will look like in the end, when in reality I just need to create the art and if I don't like it try again until I do like it.

I found the forearms to be one of my least favorite areas of the work, especially his right which is not detailed as well as the other. I need to look at how wraps like these would work in real life and draw the correct paths of the cloth. Also, I need to figure out how to properly draw cloth wrinkles for the pushed up sleeve wrinkles. If I defined the forearms better, they would definitely improve the image.

Besides that, I think I understand why you would want more flesh on the forearms, it would probably be a better balance of cloth and skin, since his upper chest to lower face is showing.

Seriously, thank you for your kind words and critique. New perspectives are invaluable.

  • I like this style. Simple, fun and charismatic. Your free approach will lead to better faster drawings. Maybe a little more flesh on his forearms. But then again he is Scarecrow.
