It took ages to find just the right combination of shaders to create pretty good gems without using Luxrender...
Not as long as you might think. I rendered the jewels on a separate layer to the metal with their own lighting ( to maximize sparkle!) The main trick is to use branched path tracing when rendering gems.
I think the jewels took about 2 hours... branched path tracing takes a lot longer to render...
