Done as a combo of what I've learned here and a Youtube tutorial. The beam was made with an emission cylinder and I put the green glow around in photoshop. The rest is 100% Blender.
Roughly based on Qui-Gon's lightsaber.
Nice on the effects! I really like the glossy shading on the overall metal. I would suggest put in some depth for the texturing (with bump maps, reflection maps and diffuse maps), but other than that, awesome work!
Thank you! The shine is mostly an accident that I happened to like the result of (I'm still relatively new to Blender).
I've yet to do the texturing tutorials, but I'll keep your advice in mind as soon as I figure out how those maps work.
