Rocky Game Environment generated in minutes with particle systems using only one photogrammetry generated rock. Done and rendered in Blender with Cycles.
You need to check Rotation and set Global Z for Initial Rotation, then put both Random values below to max. Also, make sure you checked Advanced at the top. Have fun! :)
Thankyou for taking the time to explain this great method :) . I had a quick go last night but I only had 10 minutes so I didn't get far... I struggled with randomizing the rotation on different axis. All I could find was the "size" and "random size" sliders in the dupli object settings (which was set to the rock) so mine did not look too random. Im very new to the particle system so maybe I was looking in the wrong place...I also subsurfed my rock so it was less jaggy and more pebble-like which I now regret.

Thanks a lot! I will actually be doing a tutorial on this subject, but I can explain, it is simple. I am using only one rock as a particle in my particle system, the key to get the random look is to set random size, random rotation on all axis's. This was done using three different particle system on one plane, each with a different rock size. The size of the rock is set in the particle system itself, the object does not change but you can make it more low poly if it is gonna be real tiny to save time on rendering. This way you can create environments like this in minutes, not to mention that you can also place some of the rocks yourself if you want. Here I added an HDR for lighting and two spheres emitting light, one orange and one blue. Hope this helps! :)
May I ask how exactly you achieve this with just one object? Just I am creating an animation that requires a lot of rocky and mountainous scenes and this would be a real time saver for me if I didn't have to sculpt every rock. Love your style , keep up the good work.
