UPDATE: Making some headway with work in progress picture on X-wing (within cockpit). Note: Pilot is a proxy model with only proxy textures (hence washed out - apologies).
I made a better composition now (at least I think ;-) and have all panels textured (with animations, coming soon as I still need to render) as well as PBR materials for the physical panels. Standard Cycles materials being too smooth I went to SP PBR based shading which worked quite well, only some symmetry issues on mirrored dirt and dust :-).
I will delete the other gallery image as soon as CGcookie lets me do it to avoid spam with same visual.
