My friend's/colleague's birthday was coming up. He brightens days at work - he has this never ending energy within him, and he is a big fan of Liverpool Football Club. I felt like surprising him by sculpting something for his birthday. At first, I thought I would sculpt him the logo of L.F.C. with a liver bird, but then I changed my mind because it would have bored me to death as I am not a football fan at all. About the same time, I rewatched Big Hero 6 and fell in love with Baymax.
Eventually I was planning to sculpt Baymax for myself and to shoot two birds with a one bullet I combined both into one.
I wanted to add something of my own way of thinking into a sculpture and give the sculpture a meaning.
I loved the fist bump Balalala pose! :-) Which does not make him look stiff as a statue and makes him look even cuter than he already is.
While sculpting him his back felt kind of empty to me. I think I wanted to have more detailed sculpture. I did a twist on his default nature of being a healthcare companion. By adding wings I turned him into a guardian angel with a thought that he will watch over my friend and protect him. A healthcare companion and a guardian angel - not far off from each other. Almost the same thing! :-D
At first, I wasn't planning to put any eyes. I sculpted the eyes in. Tho I couldn't work like that. I needed him to have a soul!!!
My sculptures have silver eyes because it takes forever to make eyeballs and then paint them as similarly as possible. For some reason, silver eyes in my sculptures work perfectly alright! :-) With time when my skill level is more advanced, I might make eyes unique to each sculpt but that is somewhere down the line!
A butterfly! It is an original one (therefore an Easter egg) from a currently unfinished "Butterflies" sculpture. There is a scene in a movie where instead of doing what is asked of Baymax he chases a butterfly! :-D I thought it would be fitting to add one to the sculpture. I painted the butterfly green because green butterflies are a symbol of good and represent/associate with good luck, growth, money etc. Basically everything good. :-) Which in my way was wishing my friend all the good and positive in his life!
Of course, the last but not the least the main and most important part the liver bird! At first, I simply wanted to slap him on Baymax's belly but after speaking to my housemate, more sense made that I position it where players have it on their t-shirts, which made the size of a bird 4-5 times smaller and more work for me.
I am not a concept artist and my sculptures usually start simply as some sort of idea but as I sculpt - evolve into something I hadn't planned at all. :-) This time round it's a fanart 2in1 and it also began as a simple Baymax with a logo of a liver bird, but by the end turned into a Baymax a Liverpool F.C. fan and a guardian angel with a butterfly on his arm who brings good into your life!
Sculpted in polymer clay.
