Facial expression exercises - lack of expression Final

Facial expressions exercise... This didn't really work, but I'll post it for some feedback, anyway. So I learnt a few things from this exercise... - All of my characters have very stony immobile expressions, as a default. - I dislike drawing my characters sad. - Even with several pages of sketchbook filled with attempts, very few actually resemble the same character. - This probably would have been better done with an established character, rather than creating one on the spot, so as to reduce the evolution of the character between sketches. - What looks nice as sketchy individual images with pencil and paper doesn't always look so nice once scanned, shrunk and assembled into a montage.. Selecting the ones that were most similar, I ended up with the following; (L - R) 1. The original character sketch, (neutral, talking). 2. Forgot what it was trying for, but it didn't work. 3. Scorn / contempt 4. The glare 5. First successful smile! 6. Profile (Not really an emotion) 7. Blushing 8. Kind of sad, (but failed). Might repeat this exercise later, focusing on getting the mouth to move, so that there is some actual expression involved. Suggestions or tales of similar experiences welcome!
