Animation is Blender Internal: 9h30m render time.
Still is Cycles with 200 passes.
Final number of vertices: 36,543
103 objects in the scene, 31 of which are gears.
I knew I was going to be wrong when I said:
"Animating gears shouldn't be too difficult."
Copy Rotation and Copy Transform constraints don't work if your gears are different sizes. I had to animate 'by hand', which I hope to never do again. :)
