Dung beetles are fascinating animals. Rightly in the ancient times the sacred scarab was worshipped by the Egyptians as the embodiment of the sun god Khepri.
Dung beetles existed around 30 million years ago, they are surprisingly strong, can navigate using the Milky Way and they have a keen sense of smell, so they are really good at finding poop.
They eat poop, it’s their delicious cookie and can roll their balls of poop for miles. Dung beetles use their poop balls to cool off their feet. They will climb atop their poop balls to give their feet a break from the hot ground.
When dung beetles do carry or roll the dung away, they do so primarily to feed their offspring, in their nests with poop. Dung beetles are good parents.
So, that’s why I choose this subject for my second submission for this contest, a dung beetle and his humble ball of poop. Well, what is one animal’s rubbish it is scarab’s treasure. And a delicious one!
