The thing is modeling is not for conception, it is too technical for that, concept art is for concepts, once you have your concept that can guide your modeling, then it is time for modeling

I would say keep it to basic shapes. People think they can make AAA quality stuff right away but that has not been the case for me at least. I am a hobbyist 3D artist so I have to practice at 'sucking' a lot.
