There comes a time in every digital artist’s life when they realize...sometimes it’s ok to download supplemental material rather than create it from scratch. So many situations come to mind:
- a photo-sourced texture to fill the background behind your character
- a stock image to fill a digital picture frame in your arch viz render
- 3D models for a game you’re prototyping
- a music track to accompany your demo reel
- many more
The reality is it's very common to need and use existing material to supplement your own work. Today Kent is discussing where to find free resources (including 3D models, images, music) and how to properly use them; both legally and in a way that makes the world a better place (attribution).
But in that vain, I'm not sure I ever could watch the film for enjoyment, even if it was a good movie. Seeing every single shot be meticulously constructed and altered for a year and a half definitely makes the watching experience different. Nearly impossible for me to get into the narrative
what was your role on the film?
[Opens a can of Pringles]
And yes, I've never watched the movie for enjoyment. Only to reminisce about the work we did
that would be cool
Oh yeah - The one movie I worked on start to finish that was released in theaters was not a good movie. And the writing was on the wall for much of the production. It really my hopes for that particular studio to make good films but I'm proud of the work I did on it. I'll cut it into a showreel someday
That you couldn't even watch the movie
I remember Kent you said you felt bad for a long time
Hey ya simon
I suppose I wouldn't feel too badly - I think Kent mentioned at one point doing some FX for a movie that wasn't really good, and it didn't seem like it bothered him much to concede that.
