There comes a time in every digital artist’s life when they realize...sometimes it’s ok to download supplemental material rather than create it from scratch. So many situations come to mind:
- a photo-sourced texture to fill the background behind your character
- a stock image to fill a digital picture frame in your arch viz render
- 3D models for a game you’re prototyping
- a music track to accompany your demo reel
- many more
The reality is it's very common to need and use existing material to supplement your own work. Today Kent is discussing where to find free resources (including 3D models, images, music) and how to properly use them; both legally and in a way that makes the world a better place (attribution).
I imagine the frustration of concept artist when they do some awesome piece only for production people to "see something else"
Literally! I modeled one version of Myles standish that even made it to the animation stage. Then the director completely redesigned him - had to start over from scratch.
Is there a difference between Character Artist and Character Modeler, or those two different ways of describing the same job?
Heh good call Char. Though I imagined going to target and grabbing an action figure off the toy shelf based on my model, buying it, unboxing it. Haha that would have been memorable for me
It's is on that stage that everything is subjected to change
That must be a hard job, concept artist
No concept work for me - we had a department for all the concept art. A fairly well oiled, segmented machine at studios
thinking the same thing Char
Did you do the concept as well as the model?
Sooooo now that we have 3D Print. Hmmm
