Vehicle modeling is pure hard surface modeling. Therefore it's important to be proficient with general polygon modeling techniques. This first week, we're ramping into this particular modeling skillset to prepare us for the vehicle modeling extravaganza to come!
in situations like these "Set flow / flow connect" is SO useful. Blender really falls short here
@panboy: I would say, duplicate, apply subd and use it as the shrink wrap modifier target

Freestyle only works with Blender Internal.

I wish the wireframe node didn't triangulate, it would be awesome
You could also use freestyle for wireframes.
I don't like the grid.
