First generation software: Really old software. The only one I can think of is Lightwave.
Yeah I have to stick with GIMP/Krita for now for texturing, Substance isn't quite in my budget yet. I think some use Paint.NET too, but I don't know anything about that application.
being open source people can do so much cool stuff, that's why I'd like to get into development
I think most software can be neatly divided into three categories.
I think what sets Blender apart is the community
Blender is great, and there are other great software out there as well
Sculptris is free. Z-Brush is the big brother.
