[Q] if you want, you can turn on auto-merge for the verts. it quite a useful tool. you can find it right above the solid mode button
of course I'm not sure how linking files and modifiers works in blender, if that causes slowdown or any other issues.
My vase is basically one big curve; I can reduce the number of edges easily but a metric for how many is appropriate would make this more straightforward
