Can a variable be assigned to an objects numeric data (eg. location, dimension) so that the object will change (e.g. move or scale) when the variable is reassigned?

The faces around the outer circle are light gray, the faces that I made by extruding vertices around the bites are a much darker gray. Why two colors?
