Confusion with the term "MPEG" for video output

It can be quite confusing for beginners (as it was for me) that "MPEG" is a term for a video file format (that determines how the data is arranged when being written to a data storage device) and a video codec (how the video signal is processed especially for minimizing the file size before writing it into a file). So a video encoded with "MPEG" can also be written into a file format other than "MPEG".
