How to have a chain start at somewhere at other then 0,0,0?

Hello!  I am trying to make a necklace, and I did all these steps, and got it to work fine, as long as everything was at the scene origin.  But as soon as I tried to move the curve, the empty, and the object, everything became undone.  I tried to move up to a neck on a mesh person, and it went wonky.  EDIT:  I did some more research, and instead of grouping them, I made my link the parent, and the empty and path the child objects (not sure of the term) and it seemed to work.  But, I will leave this up in case there is an easier way to do it.
