I like to think of materials as 2 qualities with a rough/smooth attribute. For example reflection with a rough/smooth amount and opacity with a rough/smooth amount. So the gummy bear would have a smooth reflection but would have a very rough opacity (ie sss) as opposed to the glass which will have both smooth reflection and opacity. This conforms to the plausible CG shading models.
