Polybook of NumberNine

Hello everyone! I've been enjoying my time on CGCookie these first two months, this is my first time touching the forums over here. Not sure if I wanted to start a polybook over here, I currently just upload all my (work-in-)progress pics somewhere else. However, I would like to start incorporating feedback from others on my projects. Is it recommend that I do all of this in a single polybook or is it better to make separate posts? I feel like it'd be easy for a single thread to slide down into obscurity, but I may be wrong about that!

I'm currently doing an exercise to model a first-person gun; I've decided to design my own watergun, but making a design from scratch is tough! I do want to improve at coming up with my own designs, so I've come up with some ideas and I'd like to hear your thoughts and ideas! It's still early days, but I intend to do a lot of iterative design and maybe eventually even make a nice portfolio piece.

The idea for my watergun is that it's cobbled together from household parts, but combined with some more whimsical magical / witch-like elements. It's supposed to feel a bit like it's been put together by a young girl, though it doesn't have to be too grounded. I have a moodboard but I'm pretty sure a lot of those images are copyrighted in some way so I won't post them here

Some sketches (vacuum cleaner parts + hose + flask / watertank)

And my rough blockout so far (everything is placeholder), blocking it out in 3D actually gives me a lot more ideas than just the sketches

I'm not too displeased with my idea so far, but it can be improved by tons! I'd like to incorporate a lot more whimsical elements, like old potion flasks etc; make it more cute, too!

Thanks for reading, and don't be afraid to comment -I'd love to hear your thoughts, good and bad.

My third object, which turned out absolutely awful. I'm honestly chalking this up as personal win for resisting the urge to chuck myself through a window. I'm making this post to give future me a chuckle for having struggled with this.

I don't think it's all that bad.  In fact, I'm a little bit jealous of your skills.

  • numbernine replied

williamatics Haha, I'm always jealous of everyone else too; I don't think that'll ever go away. Just had a quick look through your gallery (lots of stuff by the way, nice) and the gun model looks nice! I think that was from 2018 somewhere, do you have anything recent to show off? :)

  • odunov replied

numbernine Wouldn't say it's that awful. With a couple of touches to the proportions it would like an ancient statue of sorts :) Great job on the other two, though. Good luck with the realistic character course.

    @drgnclw

Well, it's something. Big part of my own learning process is just to keep making things even if it sometimes just doesn't turn out the way I wanted to. Your 'Man at Arms' character turned out great by the way! :D

numbernine If you look in my polybook (which I should really update soon), you'll see what I'm working on now.

(This is for the 'Designing Realistic Character' course. I've used a different photo set than the one supplied in the course.)

Very basic blockout with a little bit of sculpting done. I wasn't home yesterday, planned on doing more today but procrastinated on this one. For the first time ever I've been really consistent, being active in Blender every single day for about 5 months now. Besides just general art skills, one of the things I've really been working on is to stop worrying about stuff being perfect and more just working on enjoying the process and being consistent. I've had a lot of fun making some of the projects so far, but I did find myself putting off the more scary things, like anatomy. Finally spent about a little over an hour (before I go to sleep) experimenting with various ways to get a good base mesh going, which I'm pretty happy with. My goal for tomorrow is to just to enjoy myself and spend a couple of hours sculpting! The original course was a workshop format, divided into several weeks. I've decided to follow the same deadlines as the workshop, so a week for each 'step'. I guess I'm making good time if I keep that in mind ^_^

Made some decent progress today. I hope to get enough work done tomorrow so I can submit it in time for the free critique stream.

I spent some time refining certaining elements getting it ready for the critique stream only to find the thread had been closed several minutes earlier. Would really like to have had it critiqued on stream, I'd like to see how to improve the arms mostly. Oh well.

I'm waiting for next week's critique stream to continue with my anatomy, however I figured I'd give the face a try. I hadn't decided what ethnicity I'd want my character to be, but seeing as my body reference was an asian woman I decided to give that a go. I had a pretty hard time with the shape of the eyefolds, but it's getting there. This is pretty much my first time messing around with using particle hair as hair instead of making a field of grass or something. The combing is pretty relaxing :)

  • spikeyxxx replied

numbernine I agree, grooming hair is great fun and very relaxing! The short hair version looks quite convincing, I think.

Long hair is a lot more difficult. You get these hairs going through the skin and that is very hard to avoid;)

Anyway, beautiful faces, I'm jealous of your skills...

  • numbernine replied

spikeyxxx I'm still on the fence whether I want to do long hair or short hair eventually. I think it'll depend on what kind of character I'll settle on. This is pretty much the first time that I've managed to make an imaginary face that I feel looks pretty decent, so you saying it's a beautiful face means a lot to me, thanks! (I ofcourse welcome critique as well)

  • numbernine replied

Trying to come up with ideas for the character itself.

  • numbernine replied

Another idea. Clothing is going to be a real challenge on a technical level, but I haven't managed to think up of a design that satisfies me.

numbernine You have some interesting ideas going here, which I like.  What/who influences you?

  • numbernine replied

I mainly just save images on pinterest, I should keep a better list but some of the people I really like are these:

Got some feedback on the critique livestream. I'll need to rewatch the video once it's been archived because I got kind of excited and I'm pretty sure I've forgotten half the feedback except for the feet / hands being too small. I do feel re-energized to continue on with the project. I'm getting closer to an actual design too. Making all the clothing / accesoires might take a long time since I'm going to have to experiment a lot with cloth sims / sculpting etc, but I'm feeling the fun again!

Making progress on the clothing / props
