WEEK 3:

All right so, I'm working on the bust sculpture but it's nothing much to look at yet.  But in the meantime, I'd better get the other requirements out of the way before I forget about them!

Here's my second Melvin, from around six months ago:

    And here's my sculpted shapes:

    Stay tuned...

  • Ken Claassen(cptken) replied

jakeblended Nice Melvin and Shapes.... I've already forgotten about those and have to go back and do them myself X|

Looking forward to the head XD

  • Jake Korosi(jakeblended) replied

Okay, here's a progress shot of the work so far.   This is through what I'd call the first detail pass on her face.

  • silentheart00 replied

Good Melvin.  A little bumpy in areas, the bent leg looks longer than the other, some areas flatter than others.  Good effort!  The primitives look good.  The square could maybe have sharper edges.  There's something funky about the cone base.  Maybe it's not a sharp edge?  Or maybe the base isn't quite as flat as it could be?

Good forms in the head.  Looking forward to the end result!

  • smurfmier1985 replied

jakeblended Wow, this is looking really good Jake! 😄

  • Wilco Wilbrink(carrotnl) replied

    jakeblended Looking good!

  • Kent Trammell replied

jakeblended Melvin and primitives look great. Melvin has some lumpies in the back but from the front it's nearly perfect. Your bust is also off to a beautiful start! Face anatomy is easily recognizable and detailing up nicely. This week is at least an A+ so far.

    Who is she btw?

  • Jake Korosi(jakeblended) replied

@theluthier She is a figment of my imagination!

I'm using a few different photos for anatomy reference of course; but it's not any particular person.

Speaking of which, I think I'm about done with most of the sculpting....

Tomorrow I'll sculpt some hair, and maybe do another polish pass - I think I want to tighten up the "bottom" of the bust especially - and that should be about it.

No materials or particle hair or anything of that nature this week.  I said I was taking it easy and I meant it! :)

  • smurfmier1985 replied

jakeblended If taking it easy gives such amazing results you should do it more often! she is beautifully sculpted, I really love it! 😍

  • silentheart00 replied

    jakeblended Very nice!

  • Jake Korosi(jakeblended) replied

All right, this will have to be the end.  I'm not satisfied with the hair, it's just not quite clicking into place for me; maybe if I had more time I could polish it up nicely, but I suppose it will have to do.  I am much happier with the rest of the sculpt.

Now I have to think of a Week 4 project.  What to do?  Hmmmm.....I'll think of something.

  • silentheart00 replied

    jakeblended Good work.

  • Grady Pruitt(gradyp) replied

    Looking great there, jakeblended !

If you haven't already checked it out, one of the Art of Sculpting course chapters by @theluthier  is on doing a female head and hair bust.. the last chapter focuses on the hair.  You might take a look at that, but really, the hair looks pretty good, even if a little rough and less detailed.

(incidentally, silentheart00 , that same video tackles an ear.)

  • Pavel Mazanik(nekronavt) replied

jakeblended good work! I recommend to add some sharp edges and autosmooth (or holding edges and subsurf) on iris and pupil of the eye so that it isn't blurred by smooth shading.

  • Jake Korosi(jakeblended) replied

I don't know whether Kent has graded my sculpt yet; but even if so, I decided to polish the hair up a bit to make it look better.   It's not -fixed- really - I think I would probably scrap the entire hair and try a new style if I had the time - but at least it looks less "unfinished" I hope.

  • smurfmier1985 replied

jakeblended I think it all looks marvelous!! Really top notch sculpting, you make such awesome and beautiful things every time 😄 Very curious what you come up with for week 4!!

PS Kent said he was out of the office Monday and Tuesday (that's why the livestream is on Wednesday), so I think he hasn't graded it yet 😉

  • silentheart00 replied

jakeblended The hair looks better.  Good work.

  • Aaron Rudderham(thecabbagedetective) replied

jakeblended Respect for managing to finish the hair, overall great stuff! Also I know you said you made her up but I swear she reminds me of someone but I cannot for the life of me put a finger on it...

  • Kent Trammell replied

jakeblended I've not graded your latest update, but WOAH. She's turned out beautifully! Really solid anatomy sculpting and the hair to top it off - hair isn't easy to sculpt. Brilliant job this week, Jake. She's one of my faves 👍 A++
