Is there a way to change the thickness or color of major grid lines so that they are more prominent?
Unfortunately I couldn't find a setting that does this, but you may consider changing the grid color so they stick out more. This can be done in Blender's preferences (Edit > Preferences) under the Themes > 3D View tab. You'll want to change the "Grid" color.
