using a new version of blender so to see, stuck at importing the model sheet. any helpers?

You can use the Version, used in the Course (Blender 2.67), or have a look at the beginning of the "Press Start" Course, where Adding Reference Images is shown in a newer Blender Version.
I'd say the first option is best for you, because if you're already stuck now, your troubles will only get worse during this Course.
I agree with Martin. The right thing is to watch the course when you feel more comfortable with Blender and the UI changes and version wont be such a big deal to you. You can download the Blender version the course was recorded with so you can follow along more precisely, but beginners tend to not feel comfortable with that. So I suggest watching a more recent course and then go back to this one.
