Grid Fill

Good morning! When I attempt to use grid fill, the results are fairly undesirable. The mesh becomes quite mishapen, and it seems no amount of adjustment in the grid fill redo box will fill the mesh in a clean way. Is there something I am missing? I can share a photo later if needed. Thank you

    HI Jason,

Yes, a screenshot would certainly be helpful.

Yes, a screenshot to get some context. Remember though grid fill is finicky like that, it's a bit unpredictable. Also check for double vertices, or perhaps your selection might be wrong.

No variable seems to help with the mesh. It just goes haywire. Would it be more effective and time saving to just box model the pieces?

Hi Jason, could you show us a screenshot, before the Grid Fill (and without the Background Image, that is just distracting), please?

    Also,

I can't really tell from your screenshots, but with Grid Fill, it is important where your Active Vertex is, especially with concave shapes:

Does Chris in the course use the grid fill to generate the topology? I was trying to find it in the video but couldn't find it. It is totally valid to just model it by hand if the tool is misbehaving.

Yes, he does use grid fill for this mesh piece at least. I was too tired the other night to try to play with it. I have tried to select various verts but to no avail. I have not gotten a good result. I will model it a different way. It's not efficient for this model to use grid fill it seem, for me at least. =]

    Yeah,

that's a pretty 'bad' shape for Grid Fill to work; it'll almost be luck, to get a 'correct' Active Vert; I'd probably choose to fill that by hand.

It sure is complex. I will fill the mesh by hand.  I won't let a finicky gridfill command hold me back!
