Halloween Challenge 2021 WIP - The baby

Contests and Challenges

Scene:  Baby room.

Is the baby screaming?

We turn towards the cradle. [scary music...maybe Hitchcock-Psycho-shower-like...].

Looking over the edge, we see nothing, apart from a [dolly zoom] (pacifier, or baby cap, or....)

The missing baby is the scream!

That's it. The effect will have to come from camera movement, timing, music and lighting.

Don't know yet if it will be in black and white, or 'Blair witch'-like or...

Still some modeling to be done (it's a baby room after all; can't be empty...),  but nothing complicated, that will not be my challenge...the challenge will be everything else ;)

looks like a baby cam, nowadays you can have baby monitors with camera, to stalk your child.

    Great idea

Maybe add some DOF and change the black 'outline':

  • spikeyxxx replied

Different camera angle and some props 'blocked out':

I don't think I'll need to add much more objects; don't want to overcrowd the scene...maybe a fallen baby bottle with cap off to get some spilled milk for extra drama effect...the lighting will have to focus the attention on the pacifier, which will emphasize the missing of the baby (and allowing it to be screaming...)...

    Or even:

oooooo nice! I like the effect you have going on with the camera lens in these shots. It definitely adds some creepiness. I prefer the first 3.. the last looks a tad too distorted to me.

  • spikeyxxx replied

The last one was a fun experiment, but I wasn't too sure about it...the idea is that when you discover that your baby is gone, the room starts spinning around you...I kinda like the effect, but maybe you are right and it's just too much :)

I definitely like the other ones with the fish-eye lens...by the way this is where you can find it in case someone doesn't know:

    Thanks for your input jammingammon

I will look at it again tomorrow with fresh eyes...

Spent about half an hour on modeling a bottle and then about 3 hours to break it...still didn't get close to making the milk (after countless hours!)...but it's a start (I know: I still have to work on my Shaders...):

Now I don't really like explaining everything (a picture should be 'appealing' without 'analysis'; I love Tarkovsky movies, for instance, without any understanding of all the symbolism and hidden meanings...), but:

spoiler: the milk here is symbolic for life energy and also (because it is white) of innocence...so, it being spilled, doesn't look too good for our missing baby....

  • spikeyxxx replied

After more than 10 hours of trying to do the milk with a fluid simulation and not getting anywhere near a result I liked (not even getting closer during those hours...), I decided to try modeling something (with Curves) and after less than 20 minutes I got this:

It is easy enough to tweak the shape later on, but for now I am happy with the way it looks.

Changed the glass color back to pure white, because especially the shards look pretty bad before.

Still not sure how I am going to fit everything in one image though...

Did some camera and lighting tests:

or going crazy and showing the whole room:

or one that I myself find strangely disturbing:

  • Angela (amblender) replied

was the bottle droped by the mother or the kidnapper?

  • spikeyxxx replied

Both possible, find your own story, but the symbolic meaning of the milk stays the same.

Added a Cheshire Cat next to the white rabbit (will probably change the material to be plastic though..):

Next few days I will be concentrating on finalizing all assets and shaders.

From Friday till Tuesday I'll be at a wedding and a party in Holland and won't have access to Blender, so I'll have to forget about animating anything (rendering alone would take about 24 hours per second of animation...and no, Eevee is not an option for me at the moment) and just focus on making this the best still image I've made so far ;)

Maybe, I'll add some more things, but composition and camera angle should not change too much from here on...

This scene would surely make any parent scream.

I do love the wall paper.

The fish eye gives some creepy effects.

  • spikeyxxx replied

@adrian230 decided not to use the fish eye for this scene; I want this at first glance to just be a pretty baby room, that makes you happy to look at and then....the happier you start, the deeper you'll fall...

  • spikeyxxx replied

Some tweaks and a new pacifier (or should I say: 'silencer.'...)

The bump on the wallpaper was too strong wit a strength of 0.13, so I wanted to try 0.07, but accidentally typed 0.7!

Still quite a lot to be done and tweaked, luckily we still have a bit of time.

  • Angela (amblender) replied

the cat head looks creepily at the crib

  • William Miller(williamatics) replied

    That isn't a story, though.

  • spikeyxxx replied

It does, doesn't it amblender ;)

  • jammingammon replied

At that strength, the walls kinda match the rabbit: nice and fluffy... can't say I dislike it.

    Looking good 🙂
