Gandalf The Grey (The Lord Of The Rings) Work In Progress

13 loves
Hey everyone, I hope that life is treating you all extremely well. Another likeness sculpture. This one I’m planning to finish. Not there yet as far as resemblance is concerned, but close enough. I still need to sculpt more details and tweak a few things. This will be a bust sculpture. These types of projects have taught me a great deal about how to train my eye, focusing on proportion and shape. Wherever you’re situated in the world, do take care of yourselves.

really nailed it, love the hair treatment, great job as always

  • This is amazing! What is your process? The likeness is quite good, such that I've returned to look at it multiple times.

Thank you, John… you’re very kind. The likeness is not entirely there yet. I would say almost halfway, but still a long way to go. I take breaks so that I can reset my focus and return with a fresh perspective to analyze where I went wrong and how I can go about to remedy those areas.

My process on characters is quite simple. If I find something of interest, I would look at a lot of references and gain inspiration from watching the movies. I would then open a new scene in Blender and start to sculpt using primitives or a base mesh at times. I always start with the head and then work towards the torso area, and then the legs.

I would do a light setup quite early in the process. This helps me to define the character’s likeness. Apart from that, I create daily sculptures to practice and enhance my abilities. I remember a time when I had just launched Blender for the very first time. I was so intimidated and confused, not knowing anything about CG, but these days it’s like breathing air.

It took me almost 15 years, but worth the time I invested, as I have seen improvement after improvement. I’m not a pro in any regard, hence the reason I practice everyday but art makes me extremely happy. It’s nice to craft something out of nothing and to call it your own. Thank you again, John, for your kind comment.
