Fish sculpt study (V3 update) Work In Progress

The updated sculpting course by Kent was a great refresher for sculpting in Blender. I chose this great sketch by Absorb81 and took a stab at sculpting it. Would really appreciate your feedback.

  • Hey Nas this looks fantastic! Following along with the courses while working with a different example to what is being used by the instructor is always a challenge!

I've got a spot of feedback if you're after it!

You mentioned the fins in omar's comment, and that's where I picked up on something.

I can't add images directly here, but I'll add links - open them both up so you can look at them side by side.

The first has a couple of lines drawn over it, and the second is without.

Individually they all look brilliantly sculpted, however as a whole, to me they aren't as cohesive as you might have been aiming for.

In the first image, I've annotated how smooth the big fin looks in comparison to the tail. The big fin (and the smaller ones too) has smooth lines flowing through it, whereas the tail is more wrinkly and has sharper lines (especially at the top of the tail where the tip folds over). You can see the differences I'm refering to better in your image with the blue background!

Perhaps the tail could be smoothed out to match each of the fins, or the fins could be made more wrinkly to match the tail?

Regardless though, it is again, a great sculpt and I like that there's a sense of visual balance between the detail of the fins & tail, compared to the lesser amount in the rest of the body!

Thanks, Harris! I'm definitely interested in feedback and I really appreciate the time and effort you put into yours. I did feel I lost some cohesiveness after I used the pose brush on the fins and I had to try and solve for that. I'll need to work on it.

So so awesome, that is totally a super level up from the shark.

Thanks Omar! It was definitely a fun exercise. I am not sure about the detailing approach for the fins, what do you think?
