Is there an industry standard matcap for digital sculpting or modeling?

Or is it really just whatever looks cool. In a building with 100 different digital artists, what would be the primary matcap they would use? Why?

    hey nnopoo

I’ll try to give it a shot at answering.
The fact that there are various kind-of answers that question.

Each matcap helps for different scenarios and portrays lighting to help the modeler / sculptor view how light is hitting the object. Many imperfections hidden in one matcap are revealed in another. Some are good to see distortion along the horizontal plane while others help you see vertical distortion. Some show you how normals behave and others how sleek light reflects off of the surface.

I’m not an industry professional and by no means an expert. But I think multiple should be referenced in a studio setting and the reference will depend on the object and desired effect.

Shawn is exactly right. In my professional experience there isn't a single matcap that's more popular than the rest. It's always been a highly preferential thing among my colleagues.
