For 2.8 users remember to switch the rendering engine to cycles and tick "use nodes"

Thanks Jakub, but your comment seems to be outdated already (Blender developes sooo fast! Must be frustrating when making tutorials... ); 'Use Nodes' is no longer present in the Material Tab with Cycles (at least since 2.82).
