Is it possible to create that Borderlands comic book look?

Hello all.

I am ready to do the final render of my first class (Low poly rocket) project.

Its 10 pm here and I calculate it will take about 2 hours.

Once it is finished I intend to go through the whole class again, but this time alter all the shapes, surfaces, etc in order to make it more personal and unique.

This time around I would like to recreate that Borderlands comic book look.

Is this possible? And if so could anyone point me to a tutorial video showing how it's done?

Cheers :)

Hi digitalseed, is this possible? Yes. Easy? Probably not. But you like a challenge, right?

I've never tried this myself, but you might wanna look at Freestyle rendering in Blender. For instance this article: https://artisticrender.com/a-guide-to-blender-freestyle-rendering-with-eevee-and-cycles/

The writer also provides a link to a Toon shader.

    Hello digitalseed,

NPR, or non photoreal rendering not as bad as you would imagine, but can be a broad subject. This site actually has a course on the subject, I believe it's called cartoon rendering with freestyle. Freestyle in blender is a good option for the outlines, however the settings can sometimes be tricky. For shader setups, if your using I kind of simple toon shader there are many options for this. However if your wanting some texture to your shadows such as, airbrushing or magazine style cell shading (the little dots) blendernpr.org has some good resources and community ideas on the subject. I found blender render in older copies of blender (pre 2.8) a good option, and for 2.8 EVEE they've added a shader to RGB node although I have not tested this, but both of these should allow you to manipulate shadows more. In, addition when adding texture files try some different inputs for texture mapping such as view or camera rather normal  UV mapping.

digitalseed  I really like the Kamikaze shader pack on the blender market. The dev has made some pretty decent Eevee renders that cover the comic book style and beyond. It is something I have been using a lot lately. You can see some of the shading I accomplished on my profile (I am a complete novice on the node editor so this is just me toying around with no real workflow). Most of my gallery is using his stuff.

The link to his shader resources are here: You can even open up his groups to look how he got his effects. I think he was using node2code to create his shaders.

    https://blendermarket.com/products/komikaze

The cool part of his shaders is that they cast "Toon" shadows on objects that are toon shaded.

My struggle now is: I love this shading style so much I want to know how to get the same results in the unity shader and on mobile for my game porject. But that is a separate journey haha. I have amplify shader editor and know it can't be too hard if I could just learn the blender versus amplify shader node comparisons. One day I'll get there, but for now I just love using his stuff.

So many thanks for this link!

Looks very complex but I enjoy learning so ill just take my time :)

Many thanks. I will definitely do this Cartoon Rendering Crash Course :)

So many new things to learn, my brain is bursting with ideas, just need to learn how to create those ideas now lol.

    Many thanks.

Looks very interesting. It reminds me a little of PS, where you can choose to have different effects for your picture :)
