Mac OS and Blender 2.8 not the same as mesh modeling bootcamp interface

Collaborations

Am I missing something or am I trying to learn this stuff on 2.8 while some of the teachings are on another release? I've been trying to look at mesh modeling bootcamp. It's completely different interface than what I'm seeing on my machine and it's prohibiting me from following along with the videos.

    Hi Redrum,

That course was recorded in an older version of Blender so there has been quite a lot of interface changes :(

We are currently in the process of updating all the bootcamp and fundamentals courses, but that is no easy task.

The good news is that all the concepts are still exactly the same :)

It might be a good idea to follow along with https://cgcookie.com/course/learn-blender-2-8-the-basics-tutorial first.  And then you should be able to see the differences.  Of course if you get stuck, you can ask a specific question and we can help you out.

eg- "Hey where did the X button go?" (It's in the 'X' menu now)

"How do I bring up the last operation to change the amount of vertices in my circle primitive?" (F6)

    Happy holidays.

I've already watched those basics a couple of times. Unfortunately that doesn't help me as I'm not interested in learning the differences between 2.7 and  2.8. I was really expecting a straight forward learning experience.

HI Redrum, what are you having trouble with?

We can help make it straighter for you.

I'm having trouble with a lot of stuff. Going through the modeling of coffee mug I was able to get through  a lot of it but there are critical commands that don't work as instructed in the video. CTRL left click to add faces for example. Im on track pad and can't get that done. One example. Another is the modifiers video. Theres no way to understand that stuff from the video.

Hello redrumbaits. I am not familiar with a track pad, but a lot of things have turned around in 2.8.

One major thing is, that Blender used to have Select with Right as default. This is now Select with Left (which you can change in the Preferences > Keymap, you could even use the 27X Keymap). This means that CTRL left click has become CTRL right click (if you use the default left click select, if you select with right it is still CTRL left click). If at some point right clicking doesn't do what they say in a video, try left clicking and the other way around. (Don't start panicking immediately...)

Also the Header used to be at the bottom and is now at the top.

Even some things that used to be in the Toolbar (left side) are now in the 'N-panel' (on the right).

It's a bit like moving from the USA to Australia, for instance, and suddenly you'll have to drive on the other side of the road;)

Once I was on a holiday in Ireland and I couldn't open my hotel room door (but I just had to turn the key the other way around).

Can't find the modifiers video you are talking about, so I can't help you there....although not much has changed with the modifiers, at least not so much that you suddenly can't understand anything anymore from an older video.

Spikee I've never used Blender before now. So I guess I can relate by saying that I'm trying to study for my drivers license in the US with the Australian handbook.  By track pad I mean the mouse pad. The video I believe is called modeling with modifiers.

    Thank you for the reply

    Hi Redrum,

the instructors at CG Cookie are working hard to replace all old fundamental courses with new ones, but since there are only a few of them and recording takes a while (up to a couple of month, especially for big courses like the mesh modeling bootcamp), we have to be patient and give them some time to catch up 😊

In the meanwhile, since you are an absolute beginner and are struggling with theUI changes, I recommend trying some of the Blender 2.8 courses. They are beginner friendly and take away that extra frustration of the UI and shortcut changes.

Some I recommend on CG Cookie:

There are also some great free beginner courses on YouTube:

    Hope this helps!

Like Miranda said, try dedicated 2.8 beginner tutorials.

If there is something you don't understand, try to ask specific questions, ask it beneath the video where it is unclear (then it will also appear here on the Forum, but we will get a link to the video) and if possible with a timestamp.

And don't give up, when I was beginning with Blender, I felt that I was never going to learn it, because I was learning slower than Blender was developing; things where changing and new features where added, before I knew and understood the 'old' basics...(they release a new version every three or four months!) Now I can even, without any problem follow a 2.49 tutorial (2.5 also had a complete make-over with a different UI), although I have never used that (I started with 2.63, I think).

  • Wayne Dixon replied

As Spikey mentioned, most of the left and right clicks have been swapped (by default).

So to add edges it is CTRL and Right Click - just make sure you are in edit mode (which I'm sure you are)

But the modifiers work exactly the same in 2.8 as all the older versions.

Just post a specific question you are having troubles with and we can help.

I will say that using a mouse will be much easier than using the track pad.
