Hi everyone.
I am a blender newbie only really knowing some rudimentary basics. My main drive for wanting to learn 3D is to create amazing environments with a primary theme of a steampunk like feel.
At this point i am lost it has been almost 1/2 a year since I tried progressing. So i need some help with direction.
Another issue is since I am basically almost at square one again should I hop into 2.8 and try to figure that out or stay with 2.79 which has lots of learning content built around it?

My suggestion would be to stick with 2.79 as a starter, to get an idea of what the program is all about.
Use the Learning Flows to help you understand Blender better, then you can kinda see where 2.8 is going to be different and some things are the same, just in different positions. Since there is so much more 2.79 content to learn with, that would be my suggestion.
@charmn-one I agree with Char, start of with 2.79 at first until you're comfortable with it, learn all the features. And once you are comfortable and know what everything is called the change to 2.8 is actually not too big.
Also most exercises on CG Cookie are 2.7x files, which don't always open good (yet!) in 2.8, so that's another reason I would suggest starting with 2.79 at first.
The official release of 2.8 is now planned somewhere in June (if they don't push it further back again) so it will take a while before it's really here :)

but keep an eye on 2.8 developments for your future learning. and growing. As always, hit us up

What Char and Miranda said (of course I'm partial to 2.79 hehehe). In all seriousness, go through the learning flows. While going through those, be mindful of the questions that others have asked in those courses. I have found reading through those as well is a helpful experience as many peeps have probably run across similar issues that you might,
