How to view wireframe while painting?

While watching the course on Shading the Pancake Hobo, I was told that pressing "face selection masking" would make a wireframe appear that I could paint over. The photo below shows what I meant. However, it appears that this functionality has flipped with newer blender versions. Now, I can only see the wireframe if the mesh ISN'T selected in edit mode before painting, which of course means that I can't actually paint. Is there still a way to do this? I tried checking "wire" in object properties but that only seems to work in object mode.

    Hey Kyle, while I can't find an option for it in the texture paint mode itself, you can turn on wireframes on a per-object basis in the object properties. Combined with the Shadeless viewport shading option, it looks similar to what you're after:
