Where are render layers in 2.8?

posted to: Render Layers

this all looks very interesting and significant, but as i am doing this on both 2.79 and 2.80, can you tell me what has happened to the render layers in 2.80? i realise that the 20 layer system has gone from 2.80 and has been replaced by Collections, but presumably we still have access to these very useful rendering parameters in some new way?

thx, julian

jjuliandarley I just spent a few minutes trying to figure it out in 2.8 and I cannot. I know "Render Layers" from 2.7x are now remade and somewhat exist as "View Layers" in 2.8. But how the functionality from 2.7x is maintained/emulated I don't know..

You may find the answer from here:

I believe that view layers are the way to go. You can add a new view layer in the upper right corner of blender 2.8. In the scene hierarchy you can set visibility for each item (or collection) in your scene for the currently active view layer. Each view layer should show up as a different pass in a render result.

I did not want to ask about 4.2, but I'm subscribed to CGCookie because I want to avoid "good advice" on YouTube :-D How much of this is still relevant, before I sit down and watch?

    Hi corniger ,

This course is pretty old, but if you wait for a bit longer, a new Fundamentals of Compositing is coming (expected release is beginning of August). It is part of 'CORE': nine Fundamentals Courses remade for Blender 4.2.

Awesome. In almost 20 years of blending, I never cared for compositing, but I'm finally out of options. Standing by, scraping up info upfront. Thank you!
