Shouldnt the tile size much bigger when you use GPU?

posted to: Performance

From what I have read on other sites and tutorials is that when using GPU rendering the tile size is preferred to be much larger say around 256x256 and CPUs preffer low tile sizes. There is also an Addon called Auto Tile Size which sets the number of tiles automatically and that addon also uses a high number when you turn on GPU rendering. So should I use a high number when turning on GPU rendering?

Unfortunately my computer doesn't have a Cycles-compatible GPU, so I can't answer from experience.

@jlampel - Can you answer this question?

gothdir Yes, you are correct! 8x8 for CPU and 256x256 for the GPU is what I've found works best. I use the Auto Tile Size addon as well, which is quite handy. Though a recent patch to the 2.8 branch may make this irrelevant, it's still good to know for 2.79.

    hi jonathan,

now that 2.8 is in beta, is it confirmed that 2.8 no longer needs Auto Tile Size? this is a shot from yesterday's build of 2.8 and i am not sure that i see anything that does the job of Auto Tile:

    thanks,
