A way to symmetrize an animation curve?

posted to: Vanilla Bounce

Hi!  I followed the tutorial but somehow nudged the curve so that it is slightly unsymmetrical.  Is there a clever way to fix it?  I don't see a symmetrize function in the graph editor, but maybe there's a way to set handles to the same length?

    Hi David

Yes there is a 'clever' way to fix this.  But it's not going to work in many situations.

The best thing to do, it to keep them in sync when you're editing them.
But something that will work in this situation is to copy the good key over to the bad key.
Then put the playhead on that frame - CTRL M, and choose the first option.
    'Mirror Times Over Current Frame'
    That will flip the keyframe.

You probably won't be able to do this in other situations, so you can reset both of those handles to be vector, then move them both together again.
    (basically rebuild it)

Don't worry about making these mistakes though.  This is actually part of your learning.
It's not about making the perfect animation, it's about interacting with the tools and mastering them so everything becomes automatic.
Just like driving a car - you just drive.  You don't have to think, right foot increase pressure, left hand indicate, eyeballs check mirror.
    You just drive.

So just drive - even if you mount the curb and run into some fences.  It's part of your learning.
(I'm just glad you're not driving anywhere near me haha)
