Is Chatgpt Trash at Blender Advice?

Question
I use ChatGPT to help me with a lot of my Blender problems, because it is very fast and convenient. When I hit a stumbling block in the past, I would always go to Blender stack exchange, and asked there. They were definitely helpful, but it would take hours to days of waiting for a response. So I would be stuck unable to work on my project. But ChatGPT can be super easy and helpful at times, and totally gets rid of that waiting problem, but it hits a certain point where it starts to give really stupid answers, particularly the more complex or specific the question is. So what do you guys think, is ChatGPT actually helping me or is it secretly stifling my creative flow? Should I be asking around on websites like this instead?

I run into this same issue a lot. ChatGPT, and really any LLM I’ve tried, has not been very good at answering my Blender-related questions

However, Claude Desktop released a connector (literally today 4/28/2026) that links Blender directly to Claude, so that may end up being helpful. I’m still starting to test it out, but so far it feels promising. It uses the Blender MCP extension to pull information from your open Blender scene, which allows Claude to answer questions using actual information that is relevant to the scene you're working on.

you should try it out and see how it feels.

    Hi Tyler,

If you ask me, whether you should ask your question here or ask ChatGPT, I'd obviously recommend to ask it here. You might have to wait a bit, but we're usually faster than Stack Exchange. And you'll probably get better and more reliable answers than from an LLM. So, quality over speed.

But it's up to you, of course.

Yeah a human response here on a platform like CG Cookie is the ideal place I'd say... for now. At least until AI gets so good it gives you the answer before you ask the question.

    Solution

"Is ChatGPT Trash at Blender Advice?"

Is that the right question to ask?
Where is the best place to get Blender advice? is probably a better question to ask before seeking advice.

ChatGPT, or any LLM, basically collates information from multiple sources and provides a generalized human readable answer. Even more basically, it does the leg work for you, quickly.

The problem with asking Blender related questions is the frequency at which Blender changes. This does cause answers to be outdated, and either completely or partially wrong much of the time.

Questions will likely need to be refined a few times (aka: Iterated Prompting) or be much more specific, providing as much info as possible, like the Blender version you are using.
But there's another problem, with a new feature in the latest version for example, LLM's may not find much info at all to draw on.

As mentioned by others, human responses from places like the CG Cookie community may not be as fast, actually I'll rephrase that, responses won't be as fast, but will likely be more accurate due to a human more likely to understand the context of what your question is about.

An example answer by a human:
If your using Blender version 4.5LTS then do A, B, C, however if your using version 5.1 then do X, Y, Z.

    A possible LLM answer:
    In Blender do A, B, Z

However, just like all of us LLM's need to learn Blender.
So ask ChatGPT, Where is the best place to learn Blender? and then tell it to take it's own advice. If it's correct of course.

We hold the power, the CG Cookie community, by marking correct answers in the forum as the solution, should help other human Blender users and LLM's learn.
