Geometry Nodes + Action Slots : ordering? (5.0.1, 5.1.1)

Question Animation

[Using 5.0.1, tried 5.1.1] I recently learned to use Action Slots to organize animation for scattered entities - very handy.

I did seem to see one odd behavior.

  • If I create an action and a new slot for a "normal" object, I can insert keyframes there. If I then enter Geometry Nodes and keyframe a node value, Blender always seems to create a new Geometry Nodes action for the keyframe (it ignores the action I created and want to use).
  • If I instead keyframe something in Geometry Nodes FIRST, an action and slot are automatically created. But then I can continue adding "normal" slots/keyframes from other objects to that same Geometry Nodes action.

Maybe this is expected? Or is the Geometry Nodes action special in some way?

Thanks.

    Hi techworker1 ,

I don't know, I haven't used that yet, but at first glance, that sounds like 'normal' (for Blender) behavior. I will look into it, when I find the time.

Testing further, it seems that each Geometry Nodes tree creates its own Action (and first slot when needed). After that, you can add any slots you want.

Without Geometry Nodes, it's possible to create an empty Action and just add whatever (Object/Material/Shader) slots you want.

Since I very rarely use more than one Geometry Nodes tree in a project, I guess it isn't a practical limitation. Just important to do things in the right sequence.
