About Disconnect bone in Clear Parent?

Hi, in this wrangler exercise, there are a few places require "Disconnect bone".  I do not understand what it does (apart from Bone-Relations-Connected is unchecked). When it is needed? Why it is useful?  Is there any explanation presented in previous chapters regarding the topic which I missed?  Thank you for the attention.🙂

I always think orthopedic doctors would have a lot of fun rigging in Blender. Maybe that's an unexploited niche.

A connected bone can't be translated(moved) individually. This is common for legs and arms. Yes you can lock translation, but in situations where you might use rotate by individual origin you get 2 different results. I recommend playing with it to see what I'm talking about

    Hi K-Chow.

    Yep, that's explained here.
https://cgcookie.com/lessons/03-bones-bones-bones about the 3:06 min chapter mark

The head/tails are stuck in the same spot and cannot be disconnected from each other,
When you are using bendy bones, this connected option will be used for the handles (the automatic setting)

It's ok if this doesn't all stick the first time.  It took me years to realise how some things worked.

Hi, Thank you everyone.  These parenting in Edit Mode and Pose Mode; connected and disconnected are very confusing.  I watched bones-bones-bones video before and watched that section again.  Apparently I did not understand then, and may not fully understand now!  I will need more practices to get the hang of it.

I say this a lot - and I will continue to keep saying it.

Edit mode is for creating the bones.
Pose mode is for constraints and animation.
(but when you're rigging you don't do a lot of animation)

    You will get it K-Chow.
